We invite you to submit a paper or poster for the 20th Koli Calling International Conference on Computing Education Research (Koli Calling 2020) for the first virtual Koli, hosted around the world and from Finland, 19-22 November 2020.

Koli Calling is one of the leading international conferences dedicated to the scholarship of teaching and learning and to education research in the computing disciplines. Koli Calling is a single-track conference for original and novel work with research, practice and systems presentations as well as a keynote and invited talks. The conference is known for its moderate size, intimate atmosphere, and lively discussions. This year, due to travel restrictions around the world, we will be combining an on-line academic presentation and discussion program with local clusters of researchers around the world. We are strongly committed to maintaining the essence of Koli, facilitating online interaction, with many feedback opportunities.

Submitting to Koli will still mean full peer review, presentation at the Koli Conference, publication in the conference proceedings, and connections to the Koli Community, but will not require you to travel at a time when international travel is both challenging and a little concerning. This will be an excellent, informative, and worthwhile online conference at a much lower price than usual.

Topics of interest within the scope of computing education include, but are not limited to:

  • Computing education research: theoretical aspects, methodologies and results;
  • Development and use of technology to support education in computing and related sciences, e.g., tools for visualisation or concretisation;
  • Teaching and assessment approaches, innovations and best practices;
  • Distance, online, blended, and informal learning;
  • Critical comparisons of remote learning and face-to-face;
  • Learning analytics and educational data mining;
  • Computing education in all educational levels, e.g., K12, context and teacher training.

Submission Categories

Research papers (up to 10 pages) present high-quality research, broadly categorized as empirical, theoretical or systems papers.

  • Empirical research papers will include rigorous collection, analysis, and interpretation of empirical data.
  • Theoretical research papers focus on deriving a better understanding of the process of teaching/learning computing or of conducting research in computing education.
  • System papers will present systems or tools developed as a contribution to research or practice in computing education, or perhaps to practice in education more broadly.

Short papers (up to 5 pages) focus on dissemination and discussion of new ideas in computing education practice or research that merit wider awareness and discussion within the community.

Poster/demo papers (2-page abstract) are presentations of emerging ideas for research, teaching practice, or tools. Where this has previously been interactive, we welcome video recordings for this year showing the tool or idea in action.

For all accepted works, the method of final presentation will be discussed closer to the time of the conference. We expect all authors will participate in the final conference, being available for discussion, as part of their presentation. Live presentations are strongly preferred.

All papers will be evaluated prior to review to ensure that they are clearly in the right track, have been correctly anonymised, and are ready to be reviewed by the program committee. Each paper that goes to review receives at least three reviews, with senior PC moderation of the review process.

Conference: Thursday, November 19 to Sunday, November 22, with sessions arranged across time-zones, and scheduled meetups and social activities.

Extended submission deadline: For research papers and short papers we offer a re-submission slack of exactly one week. If a paper is submitted by the first deadline, it will be possible to submit updated versions of the paper until Midnight 24th of August. Papers that are not first submitted by 17th of August, or that are not reasonably complete at that time, will not be considered.

Authors please note: The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available. This date is expected to be one week prior to the first day of the conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.

Paper Formatting and Length Requirements

All submission should be anonymous. For additional instructions on how to properly anonymize your work, please refer to instructions provided by the ICER conference.

Papers submitted to Koli Calling must conform to the style rules outlined on the ACM SIG Proceedings website (ACM double column format for proceedings). Authors should use the templates listed at ACM’s site. Note that the templates were revised substantially in late 2016, and there is extensive documentation available for the LaTeX version.

The easiest way to ensure that you have up-to-date versions and the correct fonts is to use Overleaf, but any reasonable LaTeX environment should suffice if you load the correct templates and install any needed packages. The easiest way to create a Latex project in Overleaf is to use the ACM Overleaf templates. For all LaTex submissions, use the following documentclass (\documentclass[sigconf]{acmart}).

The Word version is in a transitional stage. If you are using Word, use the Interim template “Interim layout.docx” available for download on the ACM template page. Do not use the new submission template provided under the “New workflow for ACM publications” named acm_submissions_template.docx. We strongly suggest that you use LaTeX, but if you must use Word, allocate sufficient time to get it to work correctly.

Page limits of different categories are strict and include references.
